Thanks for your interest in these beautiful and important rivers.

What is Happening?

ADEQ is considering an application for the permitting of a sediment retention pond in north Arkansas. This pond, which would be a part of the Bluebird frac-sand-mining and processing operation, could affect a large area of watershed, as well as the Ozark Aquifer.

Comments must be received at ADEQ by 4:30 December 3.

Why is this important?

  • The pond will discharge up to 45,000 gallons per day into a retention pond. What will discharge into Lafferty Creek?
  • Water to operate the pond will be drawn from the Ozark Aquifer.
  • Pond holding capacity currently based on 10-year, 24-hour rain event (contrary to past 25 years' experience).
  • Clearing for the mine and the pond operations may increase erosion, further damaging creeks and the watershed.
  • Responsibility must be established for monitoring, for damages, and for reclamation after operations cease.
